What It Takes To Be A Successful Candidate

During your job search, it is easy to get discouraged and become at a loss as to how to be successful. However, there are certain inherent strides that are essential to your accomplishment. Below are a few things that you should consider in your exploration.

Resume - The first step to getting your foot in the door is a professional and well composed resume. This will give your potential employer a glimpse of your skills and qualifications before they ever meet you. Therefore, it is imperative to have a superior resume in order to be placed at the top of the stack of call-backs. Your resume should be specifically tailored to the job you are applying for and should contain no errors or mistakes.

Qualifications - This may seem like common sense, but you should search for a job you are well qualified for and would be good at. To be a successful candidate, you must have the necessary skills to walk in and do the job well with only a small amount of guidance. While there are circumstances in which you may be going into an entry-level position, you should still be capable of doing the job. Being an astronaut is a great ambition; however, there is little point applying at NASA if you have been on Wall Street all of your adult life.

Appearance - While we cannot all look like Brad Pitt or Angelina Jolie, we can each make an effort to look our best for an interview. Appearance will set the first impression; you do not want to create a barrier to overcome before you ever open your mouth. Be careful to dress appropriately. Where clothes that fit properly, nothing too tight or too loose. Also, do not wear clothes that may be considered sexy or out of context for the environment you are in. Always dress a step above what regular attire may be in that profession; for example, if business casual is what is worn in the office, dress professionally. If you are unsure, you can never go wrong with a professional suit. Pay attention to other areas as well, such as grooming, make-up, and hair. Make sure your nails are well manicured, your make- up is applied properly and your hair looks nice. You want your potential employer to be impressed when they see you. Jewelry should be kept at a minimum as it can be distracting. You should also avoid wild colors in your clothes, nail polish, or hair.

Ability To Communicate - You should consider possible questions and answers before you ever walk into an office for an interview. Some questions to consider are, "Why should I hire you?"; "What are your strengths?"; "What are your weaknesses?"; "What are you looking for in terms of salary?"; or "Why did you leave your last job?" More difficult questions may be, "What are your life ambitions?" or "Where do you want to be in 10 years?" You should think about what you will say when these things come up. Stuttering and stammering will only make you look like you cannot think on your feet and throw you off track in the interview process.

Confidence - It is amazing how people will often think of you what you think of yourself. When you apply for a position, you must do so with utmost confidence in your ability to perform anything they send your way. Of course, you want to be honest in your capabilities, but do not sell yourself short or allow them to think you are anything less than the best option available. If you know you are their best candidate, they will have no other choice than to see it also.
