Rethinking That Job Relocation

By : Carolann Bailey Lloyd

It may sound like a good idea to take that job offer in Florida but are you really sure you want to do that? Cost is one of the most important aspects you need to consider before relocating.

Think twice about the move because it will cost you substantially in moving costs if you decide the whole thing really is not what you thought and now you have to go back.

You need to keep in mind that just because you were given the opportunity to make a change to a whole new city doesn't necessarily mean that you will be living as comfortably as you currently are.

Keep in mind that as recessions and unemployment are on the rise and is occurring in every city around the country. If the new location you are considering moving to has a broader selection of employment options, your chances are better for future opportunities if you are looking for advancement.

Think carefully before you finally relocate because if you are not satisfied with your current job, then you need to have resources to make another move. If your employer flipped the entire bill to move you Florida, Atlanta or Dallas and it doesn't work out for you then it's your responsibility to get your self home.

What you need to seriously consider is the fact that if you don't like where you just relocated to or your new co workers then you need to be concerned about the non-compete clauses of your contract. If you go back home are you able to return to your old job or do you find a new job?

What you should do is to check whether the company you are planning to join is the only one in that town or whether you have other options if it doesn't work out for you there. You should always look for any clauses that mention you are prohibited from transferring from that job to any other company.

Think about what limitations may be in place for you and what that would mean for you and your family should you need to make a job change later. Remember that again you will have hire movers and packers to make the move for your family and the costs could be substantial.

As a rule to help curb the costs of movers, always shop around and compare all rates and services. Look to who is offering deals and specials. Depending on what time of year it is that you may need to move will depend on cost as well.

Always make sure that you consider the entire family on all matters of job relocation and moving. You need to make sure that the new location would provide you with good schools if you have children. You need to consider other activities and options that you can do there after work or during your time off.

Does the town your considering in Florida or Atlanta have a good mall with a good movie theater; you won't always be at work and your gong to need something to do when the weekend comes around.

Lastly you need to consider all your finances beforehand. Be sure of the monetary rewards and benefits provided by the company are worth the move, especially if you have a family to support. Working for less would not be a good idea in any situation with any move.
