A Simple Guide to Succeess

By : Michael Kinsman

Face it, anyone can come up with a book based on “Ten Things You Need to Know to Get Promoted” or “50 Shortcuts to the CEO’s Job.” And it certainly doesn’t take a genius to conjure up a book out of “101 Secrets to the Job Interview.”

But then along comes Tom Markert. He’s a pretty crafty guy, smarter than most of the others on the bookshelf. He comes up with the fetching title: You Can’t Win a Fight With Your Boss (& 55 other rules for success).

Obviously, the guy’s some sort of genius. He has 56 rules. No one else has 56 of anything. There’s something oddly alluring and magical about a book that tells you there are FIFTY-SIX rules.

Turns out Markert is global chief marketing and client service officer for ACNielsen, the big consumer research firm that helps companies figure out what does and doesn’t work with their marketing efforts. That gives the guy some special credibility.

Upon closer examination, though, Markert has too many rules. You don’t really need 56 guiding principles to get ahead in your job. You just need to be aware and implement some of the basics outlined here.

Skip the spin, tell the truth. In any corporate setting, there’s always a tendency to tell the boss what he or she wants to hear. It’s not about telling lies, but rather about shading things so we look better. Markert’s dead-on with this piece of advice. Just tell the truth so your company can deal with it effectively. Otherwise, you will start to build your own Enron.

Be motivated. In Markert’s world, having a big ego and desiring to make more than anyone is tremendous motivation. For some, maybe. But the world has too many big egos making too much money today. If you are truly motivated by your job, you’ll do good work and go home feeling successful. That’s a truer version of success.

Choose your employer carefully. Good advice for anyone. Take a close
look at your future employer before you take the job. If you are looking to climb the corporate ladder, make sure the company likes to promote from within. If not, maybe you’re better suited to another company. Maybe it doesn’t matter to you because you plan to work there only two or three years before moving on. Nothing wrong with that, either. Just know what you are getting into.

Find a mentor. This is invaluable advice. Why should you make the mistakes someone has already made? Why not cut your learning curve by asking for wisdom from someone who knows? Why not use a steady veteran as your sounding board before you offer an idea to your boss that is destined to be shot down? A mentor can be your best friend.

Surround yourself with talent. Hire the best and the brightest. Only a fool would be afraid to hire someone brighter than they are. Make certain the people you hire share your values and have passion for their work. You won’t go wrong. The more they achieve, the better you will look. And, remember, the chief executive is usually not the brightest person in the company, just the shrewdest.

There are probably a few more rules you might use for career success, but this is a good start. You don’t really need 56 rules after all. What you need are a few simple guidelines and the dedication to believe in them every step of the way. Do that, and you’ll succeed just fine.
