How To Interview for a Wholesale Job

By : Linda Ramirez

Companies and manufacturers dealing in the wholesale economy of things will have employees coming in and going out frequently. This is because the grass is always greener somewhere else. Due to this never ending fast turnover, jobs in the wholesale industry will always be aplenty. However, that does not mean that you should not prepare for the interview should you be called for one. Yes, even if there are a lot of jobs, many people will still be vying for the position. The only way to increase your chances is by showing up in the interview prepared and confident.

* Dress appropriately. It is important to always go to an interview wearing appropriate clothes. Traditionally, formal office attire is recommended which is typically a suit. Nevertheless, some companies have become a little bit more liberal nowadays in terms of work wear. This being the case, check on the company’s dress code and wear something similar or in line with it for your interview.
* Arrive on time. Another thing that should be common sense for any job applicant is the concept of punctuality. Yes, it is quite critical for you to arrive early or on time for your interview. Arriving late on the appointed time will only peeve the interviewer which may lead to low marks during evaluation or may lead to the interviewer sending you home right away. If you don’t want this to happen, make sure to arrive on time.
* Do the legwork. Any applicant will do well on an interview if he is well acquainted with the company he is applying to. Get some research done. Look at the company website and any other document or resource regarding the company. Aside from this, it is important to know the inner workings of the wholesale industry from marketing all the way to financials. If the company is operating at a global or international scale, then make sure to read up on the market standards for wholesale distribution and sales. Showing the interviewer that you know a lot about the company and about the industry will place you higher along the ladder of candidates. It may even put you at the top.

* Be confident but humble. These two traits may be contrasting but in reality, you can pull it off. Be confident during the interview when answering each question given to you. However, be humble enough to keep quiet and not to exaggerate how good you are or how lucky the company will be if you are chosen. It is important to maintain a balance. Yes, you should confidently sell yourself but you must understand that there is a fine line between confidence and outright boastfulness.
* Practice for the interview. Regardless of industry, most interviews will contain the same questions, at least in essence. For instance, one question commonly asked is “why should we choose you” or “what can you contribute or bring to the company if we choose you”. Before the interview, you should already anticipate these questions and practice answering them. However, do not memorize your answers. Your answers should seem genuine and real. Answers that feel scripted will be noticed and may not help your chances. Ask someone to practice with you a couple of times to get you ready.

All these tricks and common sense tips are well and good however, you can still do more like surprise your interviewer with something fresh and different. Remember, this guy may have interviewed 30 candidates before you. If this is the case, he is probably bored and quite agitated at this point. Rejuvenate him with a lively and positive interview. Make sure that whatever you do is appropriate though.
